Capital of the New Forest with a regal past

Lyndhurst is often described as the heart of the New Forest, and with good reason. For centuries, this bustling village has been the administrative capital of the forest, first as a royal hunting lodge and later as the headquarters of the verderers who help manage the forest to this day.

The High Street is a pleasing jumble of red-brick shops and cafés, and it’s impossible to miss the grand spire of St Michael and All Angels church towering over the rooftops. Pay a visit to its churchyard and you’ll find the grave of Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

The Verderers Court meets in public session, in a picturesque 14th-century building, on the 3rd Wednesday of every month and you can discover the curious laws and traditions that still guide forest life. The New Forest Heritage Centre is also here and is packed with engaging exhibits about the forest’s history and wildlife.

More than anything, Lyndhurst is a starting point for adventures. Step away from the centre and soon you’ll find yourself on quiet trails threading into ancient woodlands. Whether you want to walk, cycle or simply potter about, it’s the kind of village that reminds you how much pleasure can be found in going slowly.
