Gardens Inspiration Spring

30 must visit UK gardens that are at their best in spring

30 must visit UK gardens that are at their best in spring

Spring is when British gardens remember they have a reputation to maintain. Snowdrops start the conversation, daffodils pile in enthusiastically, magnolias become flamboyant, and suddenly even the least plant-minded among us are wandering around saying things like “that camellia is magnificent” as if this has always been our natural vocabulary.

It is also the most satisfying season for a garden day out. There is fresh green growth everywhere, blossom hanging overhead, bulbs underfoot, and that rare sense that the whole country has decided to brighten up at once. The RHS highlights spring as a standout season at it’s gardens for bulbs, magnolias, camellias and woodland colour, while organisations such as the National Trust and English Heritage also promote spring as one of the best times to see many of their major gardens.

1. RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey

Wisley in spring is one of those places that makes even mildly interested gardeners start speaking in hushed tones. Everything looks polished, well planned and unfairly healthy, with camellias, magnolias and woodland planting all doing their bit to make spring look exceptionally competent. RHS spotlights Battleston Hill in spring for camellias, magnolias and woodland-floor interest.

Final thought

Spring is the season when gardens feel most optimistic. Everything is emerging, opening, unfurling or generally behaving as though the year has excellent prospects. That mood is hard to resist, even if you cannot tell a camellia from a cabbage.

If you are only picking a handful, go for variety. One grand landscape garden, one intimate walled garden, one coastal or woodland setting, and one place that does bulbs or blossom exceptionally well. That gives you the full spring-garden experience, which is really just a refined way of spending a day outdoors looking delighted.

For exact peak bloom timing and seasonal events, it is always worth checking each garden’s official site before you go, as spring displays can shift with the weather.
